Visiting Santa Barbara

The 2022 International Conference on Romanticism is being held at the University of California, Santa Barbara, on the sunny shores of California’s breathtaking central coast. Attendees who stay at the nearby Leta or Best Western hotels may receive a special conference rate, while those who prefer to stay downtown may consider seeking affordable accommodation through Expedia, or through Airbnb rentals in Santa Barbara or neighboring Goleta.

Santa Barbara offers visitors a wealth of beauty and entertainment: scenic hikes in the Santa Ynez mountains, countless wine tastings and tours, authentic Spanish architecture, botanical gardens, a world-class zoo, fine dining and more. It is not for nothing that Santa Barbara is called “The American Riviera.”

 NAVIGATING TO UCSB

From Santa Barbara Municipal Airport:

The Santa Barbara Municipal Airport is mere minutes from UCSB. The Line 11 Santa Barbara MTD bus runs from the airport directly to campus, and car rentals are also available at the airport. From the airport, heading south on Moffett Place leads to Highway 217 West, which in turn leads directly into the east end of campus. More detailed directions are available here.

From Los Angeles International Airport:

UCSB is typically a two-hour drive from the Los Angeles International Airport, though driving times may vary depending on traffic and time of day. From the airport, West Century Boulevard leads to I-405 North. In about sixteen miles, I-405 North leads to Highway 101 North, which in another eighty miles leads into Santa Barbara. At the west end of Santa Barbara, Highway 101 North leads to Highway 217 West, which after two miles leads directly into the east entrance of campus. More detailed directions are available here.

There is also a shuttle that runs directly from LAX to various places in Santa Barbara and Goleta. You can find their full schedule and rates here.

From The Leta and Best Western Hotels:

The Line 7 Santa Barbara MTD bus runs from these hotels to the Hollister at Kellogg bus stop, from which the Line 11 runs to campus, for a total trip time of just under an hour. Alternatively, an Uber or Lyft trip from the hotels to campus takes less than fifteen minutes and costs approximately ten to fourteen dollars depending on demand and time of day. Those who rented a car or drove their own can head east from the hotels on Calle Real, turn right on Paterson, and take California Highway 217 West into the east end of campus. More detailed directions are available here.
